Choosing the right antivirus and security system for your device is tricky. Easy because there are so many choices, it’s hard because so many sometimes it gets confused which one to choose. One example of an Antivirus recommendation is ESET NOD32. ESET is a fairly complete security software in terms of features and superior in terms of performance. What are the features of ESET and how is it performing?
ESET NOD32 Antivirus Features
First, this package is provided for users of Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, and Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011. Although ESET offers several solutions for Mac and Linux, this product is really only available for users running Windows — so if You use the others, I don’t think this is a tool for you.
In addition to displaying impressive capabilities in virus detection and internet security, ESET Smart Security Premium includes several other programs that are useful in keeping your system running at its best.
In terms of internet security, ESET Smart Security Premium is equipped with an anti-phishing engine that automatically cuts and blocks web pages that are known to have spread material related to phishing attacks and psychological manipulation. I like the fact that options are provided for us to continue to access the page and can report incorrectly blocked pages to improve the accuracy of this feature for other users.
In addition, I am happy that the ESET phishing filter has a whitelist so that we can add websites that are incorrectly marked as phishing sites. If this web access protection is used in harmony with other features of the program — including real-time protection, scheduled scans, and the ability to scan downloads in progress — then it will be difficult to understand how malicious code can penetrate Smart Security Premium protection that is in layers.
Granular Scan Control Handles Control to You
Of course, after the system is activated, the Smart Security Premium system settings are scheduled, on demand, and real-time starts running to ensure everything runs safely.
ESET NOD32 scanning includes local drives, network / virtual drives, and removable media, so everything that runs on — and is embedded into — your system is protected. In addition, files are automatically scanned when opened, created, and run.
I am very happy that the user was given the ability to change this default configuration. This makes it easy to configure some very specific scanning rules — like automatically checking executable files but disabling open file protection.
In addition, the system is (by default) smart in terms of applying various levels of protection, but as per the scanning rules, these options can be changed so that the scan runs according to your wishes.
For example, files that have not been modified since the last scan will not be checked again. However, by disabling the “smart optimization” option, it is possible to disable this feature and force the scan to run.
Script Based Threat Detection
Windows PowerShell is one of the most powerful components of a Windows computer.
Fortunately, ESET Smart Security Premium is powered by a powerful threat detection engine that continues to monitor vigilantly to detect script-based threats that may attack from anywhere in the user’s system, including in web browser scripts.
On the front, ESET makes every effort to ensure that all common platforms are covered – in-browser script detection works, whether in Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge.
Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System
Next to the list of interesting features that ESET has added to Smart Security Premium there is also the Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) Prevention System.
HIPS works by protecting the user’s computer from the network layer to the application layer (basically, all layers of connectivity) and offers comprehensive protection against all potential threats. This is done by looking at the characteristics of the host operating system and watching him to see signs of suspicious activity.
HIPS is a very powerful form of antivirus protection that is often seen running in layers on top of enterprise-class systems such as servers and workstations — and with good reason.
This form of protection checks the state of the operating system carefully to ensure that very important system components – such as the registry file, for example – are not infected with rootkits that have successfully avoided previous forms of detection.
HIPS also contains built-in self-defense technology to protect it from malicious code that targets the program itself to avoid all forms of system protection.
The addition of this feature further proves the offer of Smart Security Premium features. I put my thumbs up for ESET NOD32 because it includes this feature.
UEFI Scanner Detects Threats Before Booting the System
Those of us who like fiddling with the operating system – especially the BIOS firmware that boots after system startup – may have come across the term UEFI before. With the extension of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, UEFI is the latest in two firmware classes.
It is possible and conceivable that malware can penetrate computers at a level low enough to damage UEFI code. ESET emerged as a pioneer in this field by offering one of the first UEFI scanners on the market.
Knowing that the operating system and firmware are the beginning of a clean boot of malicious code is the only way for you to feel completely at ease that your system is running without interruption.
ESET deserves a thumbs up in this regard because it is out of the box (with an almost literal meaning!) And shows that antivirus protection does not have to start after the bootloader.
Scanning During Inactive Conditions
It is difficult to deny the fact that a thorough scan of files and directories will add to the burden on system performance.
With ESET, you can enable scanning at rest in the advanced options menu in the antivirus configuration. Silence scan automatically starts a silent scan of your files and directories when the computer is in standby mode — including when the computer is in screensaver mode, locked, or when your account has been logged out.
This is a feature that makes me happy. I activated this feature and locked the computer for twenty minutes during the evaluation process. It was good to know that when I was gardening outside, the scanning machine automatically started working and scanned my directory to detect threats.
Scanning During Download
This never crossed my mind before, but it turned out to check the file to detect a virus after the file has finished downloading, as important as installing an alarm system after your house is robbed by burglars – when a damaged program has been downloaded, it is likely that the program has caused chaos in your system!
Fortunately, the ESET team realized this before I realized it and this is another part of the program’s strengths. ESET Smart Security Premium automatically scans downloaded files to detect threats while the file is still being downloaded.
If a threat is detected, the user is immediately notified and the download is frozen. I tested this feature using a malware test tool myself and I’m happy because this feature works exactly as I expected.
Game Player Mode
A gamer certainly needs to ensure that the machines they like are not infected by viruses and malware. For gamers who want to take advantage of the many protection features of Smart Security Premium without being flooded with notifications — or without receiving anything at all — ESET has developed a “gamer mode” that will allow gamers to continue playing without interruption.
I am happy with the possibility of configuring the system to enter game mode whenever a full screen window is opened (click “advanced settings”, then “tools” to activate this option). Of course, that means that those who use a computer as a multimedia center — or just for watching movies — can use this feature to do it without being interrupted by popups containing scan and other operational details.
Security threats can arise through any port and protocol, so it is important for comprehensive cyber security software to overcome all possibilities. Smart Security Premium has an email filtering component that allows control of all email protocols (including POP3, MAPI, IMAP, and HTTP).
The email filtering component can also be integrated with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail and provide many controls for users, for example about the behavior that they consider to be effective on email.
Personally, I left the desktop-based email program a few years ago, but many corporate users are still required to use it. After testing its integration, I am fully confident in its ability to bypass and protect against all received “document attachments” that prove to be more than just attachments.
Ease of Use
Smart Security Premium has a simple but pleasing interface.
I like how it easily and quickly maps all of my connected drives and makes it easy for me to configure scanning only for certain parts of my system (such as USB sticks that I use for a while). The detected threats can be easily marked with a red warning symbol and the “action after scanning” button allows me to immediately decide what to do by the system after polling the directory.
For those who want to get to know and tweak many of the granular features included by ESET on this tool, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. However, in my opinion the design team has been very successful in separating the basic set of features that most users want to access quickly and the “hidden” tools that are more suitable for experienced users.
If I want to run a scan when needed, for example, I just need to click a button. While the various advanced scanning options, neatly arranged in a sub-menu on the right side of the screen.
ESET NOD32 Antivirus Supports
Although I have for years reviewed all types of software programs, like the others, I inevitably encountered several obstacles when using a new product. So how does ESET handle customer interactions? First, let’s talk about what it has to offer in terms of resources.
There is a knowledge base that has been translated by the company into various languages — including some less common languages such as Slovenian and Portuguese. This is not the most comprehensive documentation that I have ever seen, but is more than enough to guide users in solving most of the problems they are likely to encounter.
The knowledge base is also well directed towards the functions of e-mail tickets and direct chat. A series of groove buttons handles the most common customer problems, and if not enough to solve the problem, you can resolve ticket information and get in touch with real people.
Live chat support can be accessed from a completely different URL. I think this is a very good idea because for many users – including reviewers – this is the preferred method of solving problems. Chat support is sent via an application called Bomgar and even neatly integrates with your operating system’s notification engine.
Finally, there is a telephone support center based in San Diego, California. For those who prefer to get help that way, it’s always fun when companies make it an option.
ESET NOD32 Antivirus Pricing
Given that the program includes several features of both, Smart Security Premium is more expensive than the other two members of the premium ESET product family — Internet Security and Nod 32 Antivirus.
However, the difference is small and I stick to my beliefs as usual to not try to save important protection for the operating system. Subscription packages are available from one to three years and the price varies depending on the number of machines covered.
ESET NOD32 Pros and Cons
I caught some of the advantages of ESET Smart Security that is easy to use and operate, has protection against viruses and spyware that have been tested. It has fairly complete features including antispyware, anti-phishing, anti-spam, anti-theft and a built-in firewall.
In some cases it fails to remove malware, other than that for ESET Smart Security the price is quite expensive for some users. ESET Smart Security also does not provide offline virus updates, so it is less suitable for those who have ESET Smart Security but do not have an internet connection.
ESET NOD32 License Keys
Just like other paid Antivirus, ESET Smart Security provides a trial for 30 days for the trial period. You can activate your trial license for 30 days by entering a Valid Email and also an Internet connection. During the trial period, you will get the Full version of ESET Smart Security.
